Conference Themes
APSA 2007 conference committee has pleasure to invite academics and students of APSA members as well as other scholarly practitioners, outside APSA membership who are concerned with planning and related issues, to submit abstract proposals for individual papers, roundtable discussions, and poster presentations in its forthcoming 9th international conference.
The theme of the conference is ‘Towards an Asian Approach to Planning for Millennium Development. The emerging trends in the world economy and the prevalent tendencies of international political affairs clearly indicate a leading role for Asia to play towards achieving the UN declared Millennium Development Goals. The criticality of Planning towards such endeavors is highlighted by several factors such as; that Asia is the home for nearly forty percent of the world population; many of its states are experiencing rapid economic development even amidst political turmoil and ethno-nationalistic up rise; and the rich, long dated, and diverse natural and cultural heritage they inherit; etc. Besides the centuries old planning traditions, evidently owned by many Asian states, contemporary planning in all over Asia is highly preoccupied by the norms and concepts of post-industrial planning in the West. The Western models of planning have merits of their own, but over many decades by now they have proved to be inadequate to address the myriad of complex issues related to the socioeconomic development of Asian states, which in some way are unique to the region, although indiscriminately integrated with worldly affairs.
Hence, there arises a need to search for alternative planning models that can be appropriated to Asian societies, deviating from conventional ones. The development of such alternatives necessitates an intellectual discourse on problems, prospects, lessons, possible scenarios and future directions of planning in Asia, in the context of global affairs related to planning. This conference will be a venue to initiate such discourse in planning at a time that global attention is drawn towards Millennium Development Goals.
The main conference aims to provoke discussions on the possibilities for existence, likely objections, and tentative characteristics of ‘Asian approach towards Planning’, in the wake of achieving Millennium Development Goals. But, the conference will be open also for papers and discussions related to:
- Planning Theory
- Planning Education
- Asian Identity in Planning
- Transnational Planning
- Urban & Regional Planning
- Planning History
- Local Governance
- Planning Technology
- Environment Planning for Sustainable Development
- Investor-Planner Collaboration
- Infrastructure Planning
- Society & Culture
- Urban Design
